While most teachers decide to pursue full or part time studying during their sabbatical, I've decided to pursue a full time book writing project, which was a real pain to get organized and approved by the higher powers of authority in Israel, but finally I can say...
I'm off! (and what a great feeling it is!)
And now, about the book...
I've formally started writing a teacher's resource book for raising literacy levels and closing the gaps in reading. This book writing project is what I will be doing for the next year or so, before I finish my full length sabbatical. (August 2008 -sounds miles away)
It's actually interesting writing about something I have dealt with for quite a number of years now, but from the other side as a writer and not from the receiving side, as a teacher.
So, what makes this book and the writing process of it so special and unique?
1. Literacy levels are going down. This book will help the teacher try to close the daunting and growing problem of closing the gaps in reading.
2. As a teacher, I've read countless books by teachers in the field. Now, it's my turn. It gives the me a real air of confidence that I can do it.
3. There are so many stages involved in writing a supplementary book such as this. (don't ask me about them now, I'll keep you in the loop)
4. Writing this book reflects the personal and professional journey I have been on as an ESL teacher for the last 11 years.
5. I am learning on my own, thru the process of writing, about non-fiction writing.
6. I realize that I am not without a lack of what to write. (I can easily write 200 pages)
7. I will have a mentor who will act as a guide overseeing and supervising the project.
8. I will be able to incorporate all the strategic lesson plans and ideas I have collected from over 11 years of my work.
9. This book will be a dream come true! (finally to have something I can truly be proud of and is my own)
10. I will have the honor of writing about a few success stories of students who I have seen grow and develop in their literacy skills.
11. This book hopefully will help other practicing and new teachers in the field who are facing similar problems of literacy.
12. Many people are important in influencing my own growth / learning that went into the writing of this book.
Thank you for reading and for your comments!
Happy TT!

This sounds absolutely fantastic! As a novelist, I'm concerned about literacy levels and the fact that people seem to be reading less (myself included this calendar year!) -- I want there to be people who'll read MY books when they come out!
If me and my road crew can be of any help to you, holler!
thank you very much for your help and support. I really appreciate your comments.
Is your mentor going to help you find the focus for your project? I've heard 2 things as I've read your blog--a "supplemental teacher resource book" and a longer work. I'm curious as to the format you're thinking of for the project.
